Check Out The Difference between Hurricane, Cyclone, Tornadoes And Typhoon

The names of different storms sometimes confuse us because of how similar they all occur, that is why I'll get to discuss the difference among these 4 storms below:

1. Hurricane

Hurricane is a very violent wind storm that has a minimum wind speed of 119km/h and a diameter of 500 to 1000 miles. They are usually formed in the Atlantic Ocean and the Northeast Pacific basins.

Hurricanes are categorised into 5, category 3-5 are known as major storms, a category 5 hurricane can come with a wind speed of 252km/h.

2. Cyclone

A cyclone is is a type of weather system in which winds rotate inwardly to an area with very low atmospheric or barometric pressure.

The movement of the wind is in an anticlockwise direction in the Northern Hemisphere while it moves in a clockwise direction in the Southern Hemisphere. They usually occur in the South Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal

3. Typhoon

A typhoon is a very violent tropical storm that comes with strong rotating winds, rain and destructive tendencies. They are the type of tropical cyclone that occurs between 180° and 100°E within the Northern Hemisphere.

Typhoon usually occurs in regions like the China Sea, India and the Philippines.

Note: Cyclones, Typhoons and Hurricanes are the same weather phenomenon, they are just called different names in different regions.

4. Tornadoes

A tornado is a violently rotating, funnel-shaped column of air that extends from a thunderstorm, these funnel-shaped columns of air are always in contact with the earth surface and the cloud.

The funnel-shaped air is made up of dust, dirt, debris and water droplets.
